Created in paradise

Nestled in the foothills of the Southern Alps near picturesque Arrowtown, Broken Heart Spirits was born from the memory of a beloved life lost.  They endeavour to create gin that captures the glory days of a friendship between two Germans, Joerg and Bernd, that met in the South Island and bonded over their mutual appreciation for creating fine spirits before Bernd tragically passed away.  After months of mourning his dear friend, Joerg realized Bernd would want him to produce and market the gin which they had worked so hard on together, and named it Broken Heart Spirits in commemoration of his dear friend.

Nine years on, what started as a small operation has expanded into a company that produce twelve award-winning products.  Priding itself on still being a small, artisanal distillery, employing six full time members of staff, the team are passionate in everything they do in honour of the love and friendship that bore this company.

There is a lot to talk about at Broken Hearts with the next couple of months proving to be a period of significant importance and growth.

In May the team at Broken Heart released a NEW, award winning, Queenstown limited-edition gin to mark its ninth birthday and is described as ‘warming and rounded’ to sooth the tastebuds in the heart of winter. It combines botanical essences from its Navy Strength Gin (which weighs in at an impressive 57% proof) with the alcohol content of the company’s Original Gin, creating a new and unique flavour profile. Winning Gold in the NZ Spirit Awards 2021 the team are very proud of this eloquent new drop. Broken Heart also received Silver Medals for their Original Gin, Rhubarb Gin and Angel’s Share #3.

Also coming in July, Broken Heart are excited to announce the opening of Queenstown’s first boutique gin tasting room the Gin Garden. This will be the perfect location to sample all the locally distilled Broken Heart Spirits range including a new locally brewed Ocktoberfest lager.

Located in Arthurs Point, just a 10 minute drive from Queenstown and Arrowtown and only a 3 minute drive from the base of Coronet Peak ski field. There will be a refined food menu on offer, produced from locally sourced delicacies also available to takeaway for your convenience.

Tastings will be offered so customers are able to choose their favourite flavour and the talented bar staff will be able to create a cocktail to suit those preferences or the customer can choose from the extensive list of Gin Garden staff favourites.

For exclusive groups, tastings can take place in the private boardroom. The knowledgeable staff will talk you through how locally sourced Otago botanicals and pure water derived from the Southern Alps form the backbone of Broken Heart spirits.
